World Antibiotic Awareness Week 2024 ( WAAW): November 18th-24th 2024
The Chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association Rivers State Branch Dr Diamond Tamunokuro on behalf of SOC and SEC Commemorate World Antibiotic Awareness Week, which is an initiative led by the World Health Organization (WHO) to raise awareness about the global threat of antibiotic resistance and to promote the responsible use of antibiotics.
Antibiotic resistance is a significant global health issue that occurs when bacteria evolve in response to the use of antibiotics, making these medications less effective or ineffective in treating infections. This phenomenon can lead to longer hospital stays, higher medical costs, and increased mortality.
Causes of Antibiotic Resistance
- Overuse of Antibiotics.
- Incomplete Courses of Treatment.
- Antibiotics in Agriculture.
- Poor Infection Control.
- Global Travel and Trade
Consequences of Antibiotic Resistance
- Treatment Failures.
- Increased Healthcare Costs.
- Higher Mortality Rates.
- Surgical Risks.
Prevention and Control
- Responsible Antibiotic Use.
- Infection Prevention.
- Surveillance and Research.
- Education and Awareness.
- Regulation of Antibiotic Use in Agriculture
Antibiotic resistance is a complex and multifaceted issue that requires a coordinated effort from individuals, healthcare providers, policymakers, and the agricultural sector to combat.
Awareness and education are key components in addressing this public health challenge and ensuring the effectiveness of antibiotics for future generations.
