WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY 2025

Theme: Access to Services: Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies

The Chairman of Nigerian Medical Association, Rivers State Branch (NMA Rivers), Dr. Tamunokuro Diamond, on behalf of the SOC and SEC, joins the global community in commemorating World Mental Health Day — a reminder that mental health is an integral part of overall well-being.

In times of catastrophes, crises, or emergencies, mental health challenges often increase due to stress, loss, displacement, and trauma. Healthcare workers, first responders, and the general population are all at risk.

🧠 Common causes and risk factors include:

* Exposure to violence, disaster, or grief
* Chronic stress and burnout
* Substance misuse
* Social isolation and lack of support
* Poor access to mental health care services

💚 Prevention and Protection Strategies:
* Early recognition and timely intervention
* Strengthening community-based mental health services
* Promoting self-care, rest, and social connection
* Reducing stigma around mental health discussions
* Ensuring mental health support for healthcare workers

👩🏽‍⚕️👨🏽‍⚕️ As doctors, we must prioritize our own mental well-being while advocating for improved access to mental health care for all — especially in emergencies.

📢 Call to Action:
Let us work together to build resilient systems where mental health services are accessible, inclusive, and integrated into emergency response and everyday healthcare.
Let’s break the silence, offer support, and foster hope — because there is no health without mental health.
